When most youth turn 15 or 16 they think about their future and the careers they might go for. They wonder what they might be good at, look at the various fields, and begin to plan. Generally many look for a job so they can buy a car, save for college, or just have that all needed spending money to afford a phone, gas, or all the important things teens need. Most will apply at McDonalds or other fast food or places which do not involve their long term career goals.
This winter, Family and Youth Initiatives received a grant from Job and Family Services to help the youth of Tecumseh to have internships, job shadowing, and jobs at many places which are closer to their dreams than many jobs they might apply for. For the past three months FYI has been working with a growing number of students to get ready to apply for special jobs with businesses which could lead into careers in law, landscaping, cosmetology, culinary arts, and other specific fields. Local businesses are cooperating well and helping FYI find internships, and job shadowing opportunities for our youth.
The WIOA Project (Workforce Investment Opportunities Act) removes barriers for young people working to complete high school, college, or specialized trainings. It helps students identify strengths and set goals for a path to gainful employment. As we all know, young people today face challenges such as lack of education, economic limitations, unreliable transportation, childcare costs, substance abuse, or learning disabilities.
WIOA ensures the following benefits to every eligible student, including those in the foster car system or who have special needs including: mentoring, work experience, internships, and job exploration, leadership and professional skills development, and academic support for all developmental levels.
This program is open to any qualified youth in Clark County from the age of 15-21. All are encouraged to call the FYI office at 845-0403 and come and see if they are eligible for the program which will give them the tools to reach that long term goal they have for their lives. Classes on job skills trainings are happening now so call today and get started!!
