The Tecumseh Arrows basketball team travelled to face the Kenton Ridge Cougars on Friday night. The Ohio High School Athletic Association designated the evening Military Appreciation Night, and every high school in the state recognized the military veterans in attendance during the playing of The Star Spangled Banner before each game.

Tecumseh’s guard, Clay Mastin led the Arrows to a 56-47 victory by scoring 27 points and creating good shots for teammates with his quick dribble and penetration to the basket. It was a highly contested contest for much of the game, but the Arrows’ high percentage shooting and fierce rebounding down the stretch certified Tecumseh their victory.

Once the game tipped off, the two sides traded baskets for much of the first quarter with the Arrows making three 3-pointers and the Cougars answering with two 3-pointers of their own. Both teams came out of the gates with effective ball movement and were able to find and knock down good shots.

The first quarter ended with Tecumseh leading by just two points, 17-15, and as the back and forth nature of the game continued into the second quarter, it was also a two point, 28-26, lead for the Arrows at half time. Mastin finished the first half with twelve points and Ross Warren had eight. Tecumseh coach Roger Culbertson, said that the message to his team at the half was a direct one, “Rebound. I told our guys we need to rebound better, and they did that.”

After taking their coach’s advice the Arrows battled in the paint for rebounds and settled down the ability of Kenton Ridge to put back their own misses off of offensive rebounds. Though for a span during the third quarter, the Cougars over took the Tecumseh lead, it was short lived as once again the elusive Clay Mastin scored eleven points in the third quarter to give the Arrows a ten point lead, 47-37, with one quarter to play.

Tecumseh kept their cool, and finished the game strong as the Cougars cut the lead to seven points with two minutes left to play. The Arrows’ Ross Warren, Reid Hale, and Mastin were able to keep the Cougars at bay and finish with a 56-47 road victory over Kenton Ridge. Warren finished with twelve points, Hale with seven points, and Mastin lead all scorers with his 27. It hasn’t been an ideal season as far as wins and losses for the Arrows but they know there is still basketball to be played and will keep battling. When asked about the team going forward coach Culbertson said, “We’re just going to keep working to get better each day.”
