One of a coaches biggest struggles is having their team focused over the holiday break. Tecumseh girls’ basketball coach Danielle Thomas felt that pain last week.

The Arrows’ struggled at times to score, but their effort was at a high level as Tecumseh defeated Fairborn 63-40 to win a non-conference game at Reynolds Gymnasium.

“I thought our kids played super hard start to finish tonight, I don’t think we were crisp and that comes from Christmas break,” Thomas said. “We are normally aren’t tired during a game and I felt there were points in the third quarter that we were tired out there. I thought they picked it back up in the fourth quarter.”

Corinne Thomas led the way for the Arrows with a game high 25 points, while Macy Berner added 16 and Presley Griffitts added 14.

The way the game started, it appeared that the Arrows would put them away early. Griffitts scored four quick points and helped the Arrows jump out to an 8-0 lead before the Skyhawks got on the scoreboard.

Thomas buried a big three and Allison Berner scored in the closing seconds of the first quarter, and led 15-3 after eight minutes.

Fairborn hung around in the second period, thanks to the play of Jana Brown-Griffith and Kaylie Cook, keeping the game in reach with the Arrows maintaining a small double digit lead for the remainder of the half.

Thomas had a big second quarter for Tecumseh, scoring 10 to give the Arrows a 33-16 lead at the half. The Arrows opened up the lead with a 6-0 run in the final minute to expand the lead to 17.

Both teams played evenly in the third, as Brown Griffith scored eight and Evelyn Oktavec scored five for the Skyhawks including a long range three to try to keep Fairborn in the game. But the Arrows stood their ground behind six points from Thomas, with four each from Macy Berner and Griffitts, giving the Arrows a 49-32 lead heading to the fourth.

After Fairborn cut the lead down to 53-38 with 2:42 left, the Arrows put the final nail in the coffin with a quick 6-0 run, all free throws, as the Arrows went on to their ninth win of the year.

Griffitts added eight steals and five assists for the Arrows in the win, while Macy Berner had a team high six rebounds.
