Hunter Hensley had one of his best performances on the mound this season, as he pitched a complete game three-hitter and struck out ten, as Tecumseh defeated Piqua 5-1 in the opening round of the Division One Sectional Tournament on Wednesday on the road in Miami County.

But that’s not the win that everyone is talking about.

On Thursday night, the Arrows shocked the baseball world as they knocked off the state’s third-ranked Butler Aviators 4-3 in Vandalia to advance to the sectional finals.

“We played the plays we needed too,” Tecumseh coach Chad Hale said. “We know we have played close games all year, and we have two top-notch pitchers who can play with anyone. We talked about going over there to win, and we expect to win.

“We had to play our best game and we did.”

Against Butler, the Arrows scored twice in their first inning to take the early lead, only to watch as Butler took the lead 3-2 after the third inning. Tecumseh tied the game in the fourth, then scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI from Logan Donovan. Caleb Ricks reached on an error, Anthony Steele moved him to third, and Donovan worked to a full count. Ricks scored on a ground out and beat the throw to the plate.

Keaton Mohler was 2-3 for the Arrows in the win, and Jack Dague picked up the win, striking out five.

“They were human just like we were and we could beat them,” Hale said.”

*In their opener against Piqua, the Indians took the lead quickly, as Cory Cottrel led off the bottom of the first inning by reaching on an error, and Noah Lyman singled and Travis Smith drove in a run when he reached on another Arrows error to give the Indians a 1-0 lead. Piqua then loaded the bases with one out, but Derek Hite flew out to left field, and Smith was caught off of second base on a baserunning error, ending the inning with the unconventional double play.

Tecumseh struggled early, as all three batters struck out in the second before coming back in the third to take the lead.

Anthony Steele was retired but Caleb Ricks doubled and Blais Hale reached on a single. After another out, Hensley singled in Ricks to put the Arrows on the board. Jack Dague then doubled to score two more runs, but Dague was thrown out trying to stretch the play into a triple. The Arrows led 3-1 heading to the bottom of the third.

Hensley controlled the fourth with three strikeouts, and the game went to the fifth as Tecumseh remained in front by two runs.

In the fifth, Steele reached on an infield single, and two outs later, Yeary singled and Henlsey drove in a run with another single to score Steele. Dague then drove in Yeary with a single, and the Arrows were in control 5-1.

Tecumseh next plays May 19 at a location not determined as of yet.

*Tecumseh Softball- Tecumseh lost to Centerville 2-0 to get eliminated from the sectional tournament. Jessica Wilson pitched well but took the loss for the Arrows, and added a hit.

Before the loss, the Arrows won their first tournament game knocking off Sidney 7-0. Wilson went 2-4 with an RBI, Jenny Wright was 2-4 with an RBI, Ashley Fite added three hits with two runs scored, five runs batted in with two homeruns and a double. Brooke Barger added two hits. Wilson got the win with nine strikeouts and allowed three hits.

*Tecumseh knocked off Northwestern Thursday in a regular season makeup game to end the season 2-1.

Wilson earned the win and added a hit with an RBI. She also added a homerun.
