Runs were at a premium last Wednesday evening at Tecumseh High School, as the Northwestern baseball team battled Carlisle in the Division Three Sectional Championship game. Carlisle broke open a scoreless tie in the third inning, and added an insurance run two innings later as the Indians eliminated the Warriors from the post-season 2-0 to give Carlisle the title.

“I thought Gage (Vorhees) pitched a good ballgame,” Northwestern coach Todd Houseman said. “We didn’t hit and had a couple of chances. We couldn’t get a timely hit.”

“He wasn’t overpowering, but he only walked one guy but he kept us off balance.”

The game turned into a pitchers’ duel between the Northwestern sophomore Vorhees and Carlisle hurler Jake Glover. In fact, it wasn’t until the third inning when the games’ first hit was recorded.

Carlisle threated in the first inning when Adam Goodpaster led off the inning being hit by a pitch, and was moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt. When Glover walked, the Indians saw their threat end when Vorhees bowed his back and retired Caleb Boy and Reece Human to keep the game scoreless early.

The Indians broke through in the third inning, as Goodpaster slapped a one-out double and moved to third when Jordan Parrish grounded to first. Glover then singled to knock in Goodpaster, pushing the games’ first run across and giving the Indians a 1-0 lead.

A walk to Boy kept the threat alive before Vorhees struck out Human to close out the inning.

The Warriors picked up their first of the game in the fourth inning when Cole Baldwin singled to open the inning, but could not move him up as they could not score.

Another run scored for Carlisle in the fifth inning, as Jake Moore singled and Parrish reached on an error and a sacrifice moved both runners up. A ground out from Boy brought home Goodpaster, giving the Indians an insurance run.

“We hit the ball right at them,” Houseman said. “He threw strikes and had a good curveball.”

Northwestern finished the season 15-12 overall, and had a great ending to the season over the final 17 games.

“The last 17 games we ended up 12-5, I am real proud of them,” he added. “The kids kept fighting with some big wins. We got better as the year went on.”

Seven returning starters for next year for the Warriors.
