Clark County residents and folks from around the Miami Valley have plenty of fun waiting for them during the month of October. Every weekend offers an exciting adventure filled with food and fun for the entire family including their canine buddies.

On Saturday, October 3rd the annual Woofstock – Peace, Paws and Pet People event will be held in Snyder Park this year near Central Bark. This event has vendors, demonstrations, music and Food Trucks. The event is sponsored by National Trails Parks and Recreation (NTPRD). Dogs are encouraged to attend with their humans.

The Humane Society Serving Clark County will be at the event with adoptable dogs as well as $10 discount coupons for microchipping. Shelter Director Krissi Hawke will be on hand to micro chip pets at the event or you can bring the coupon to the shelter later in the month.

The Humane Society is kicking off a drive to help support the shelter with donation of dry dog and cat food. You can bring your donation to this event or any of the upcoming events listed below. The training program is also in need of soft treats and rolled or flat rawhides. The goal is to fill the Trick or Treat Bag by October 30th with your generous donations. The shelter will also be selling raffle tickets to help benefit the shelter programs.

Also on October 3rd families around the area can join the fun at Indian Valley School in Enon for the NTPRD sponsored movie night. The feature movie will be Annie, which was released in a new version last year. Movie night moves to New Carlisle on October 10 in Smith Park where you can enjoy ParaNorman another great movie for all ages.

You can get a head start on the first weekend of October by attending the start of New Carlisle’s 11th Annual Heritage of Flight Festival and Parade. On Friday evening, October 2nd the fun begins at 2 pm at the Beer and Brat Hangar. Later in the evening, there is a Classic Cruise-in. On Saturday the fun begins at 7 am with the Impact Bethel Pancake Breakfast followed by the 5 K Walk/Run at 8:30. The popular Parade of Planes begins at 11 am and travels along Main Street. As fall continues, so does the fun in our area. On October 10th, a major fundraiser for The Humane Society Serving Clark County will be held at Brandeberry Winery in Mad River Township. The Winery located at 5118 Jackson Road hosts the annual event from 12 – 5 pm. Brandeberry will release their new wine Forever Home with some of the proceeds benefiting the shelter.

Pet owners can bring their dogs to the event that features food, wine tasting and vendors. There will be a number of raffles for pet themed baskets as well as a 50/50 drawing. A costume contest for dogs will be held with judging at 3 pm. If you are looking for a new furry friend, the Humane Society will be on hand with adoptable pets. The filling of the Trick or Treat Bag of treats for the training program will continue at this event as will the collection of dry dog and cat food for the shelter.

October 10th and 11th is one of the biggest weekends in Enon as the annual Apple Butter Festival fills Enon-Xenia near Settler’s Park and the Enon School grounds. Apple butter will be made in the traditional copper kettles stirred by volunteers until just the right time.

Also featured at the event are art and craft booths and many local organizations and vendors offering food and baked goods.

Moving on to the third weekend of the month, NTPRD will host another great family event sponsored by the Hollandia Gardens Association. Proceeds from this event will support the construction of three themed gardens in Snyder Park including a children’s garden with interactive features, a maze and a garden suited to those with mobility limitations.

The Fall Fest will feature arts and crafts along with food vendors. Games and activities for the kids begin at 1 pm and end at 4 pm. A Hay Ride is also planed from 11 – 4 each day.

The Humane Society will be on hand at the event and they will be accepting donations of dry dog and cat food along with another opportunity to fill the Trick or Treat Bag with soft treats and rawhide chews for the training program.

The First Annual Slice of Springfield will be held Saturday, October 17 from 5 – 11 in Veterans Park. This NTPRD sponsored event is for pizza lovers and football fanatics. Tailgating in the park with a live broadcast of the Ohio State vs Penn State game at 8 pm on a giant inflatable screen.

The last Saturday in October brings the traditional Trick or Treat night for all Clark County youngsters. Because October 31 falls on a Saturday this year, Clark County will actually celebrate with door to door beggars on the traditional Halloween holiday this year. Time for the event is 6 – 8 pm.

November offers more options for fun just before the holiday rush begins. Friday, Nov 6 NTPRD and the Clark County Parks District will sponsor Around the Campfire, Native American Story Telling at George Rogers Clark Park at the A Framed Shelter. The time is 7 – 8:30 pm. The event is free; however registration must be completed prior to November 2. Call 328-PARK for more information.

On November 14 from 8 – 4 The Ohio State University Extension will host A Bounteous Harvest at Springfield High School. The cost is $15 and will feature exhibitors who will share their local products. All of the food served at the event will be local. It is a busy month in Clark County Ohio with many free and affordable activities for every member of the family. The biggest problem will be trying to fit them all into a busy schedule.
