MAHS2Benjamin F. Kauffman was born in Medway March 11, 1863.  When he was a young man he, along with a cousin, went west mainly to see Yellowstone National Park.  To raise money they got a job working on horse drawn streetcars in San Francisco, CA, and Peoria, IL, and later worked on the original cable car company in St. Louis, MO, for five years.  When the news of the building an electric interurban through his home town of Medway he applied and was accepted to become a conductor for the D, S, & U Railroad.  He was a conductor for the interurban from 1900 until 1930 when they placed him as an operator of the company’s “deluxe” trains.  At one time he estimated that he travelled more than 2,000,000 miles.  He wore the C & LE veteran’s pin and carried a gold watch which was presented by the company to its veteran employees.  Mr. Kauffman passed away after a brief illness on October 2, 1931, ending a career of 42 years as a public servant in transportation.
