Election Day couldn’t keep Clark County’s Bethel Township trustees from taking care of business on the rainy evening of Nov. 8.

Trustees Nancy Brown, Don Minon, and Dave Phares held a brief meeting at 7:00 pm in the Styer Park Lion’s Den on Gerlaugh Rd. The township’s Fiscal Officer, Melanie Cochran, township Coordinator, Ray Nelson, and Fire Capt. Mya Mitchell, were also in attendance.

Cochran reported that the township’s insurance company is requesting the township’s fire department no longer allow “ride a-longs” for the department’s “Explorers” youth program. The program is an extension of the Boy Scouts of America. The insurance company is also frowning upon allowing local college students studying for a career in the Fire department or as EMTs to ride along on calls.

Firefighter, Lt. Jim Carpenter, reported the fire department needs to hire more personnel, and riding along on calls gives Explorers and college students an up-close look at what first-responder work entails. The fire department has already hired some of its former Explorers. Lt. Carpenter and Cochran reported they are pursuing more information from the insurance company to find out what the issue is, especially since Explorers already carry a $1 million insurance policy to participate.

Another topic generating a lot of discussion regarded what steps need to be taken before the township may grant the Park Layne Wee Arrows football team permission to grade, level, and re-seed the football field it uses at Raynor Park. The field is in a flood plain so the request requires special considerations before anything can be done. Nelson said he would get more information and present it at the next meeting.

In other business, the Bethel Twp. Trustees approved allowing the Clark Co. Park District to use the Styer Park Lion’s Den for free for its Volunteer Dinner at in January. The Bethel Twp. Fire Assoc. was granted permission to use the Donnelsville Cabin for free for its annual Christmas Dinner.

Bethel township will be paying the expenses for the township’s elected officials, township coordinator, and fire chiefs to attend the 2017 Ohio Township Assoc. Winter Conference to learn how to administer township meetings more effectively.

The trustees declared 1139 Chalet Ave., New Carlisle, and 442 Stratmore, New Carlisle as nuisance properties.

The Bethel Twp. Trustees will hold a work session at 4:30 pm on Nov. 15 in the Bethel Township building located at 3333 Lake Rd. in Medway. The meeting is open to the public.
