Ohio families will get a small break again this year in the way of a Sales Tax Holiday when they go shopping for school supplies on Friday, August 5 – Sunday August 7. The State of Ohio started this program last year and elected to allow shoppers to save again in 2016.

The savings extends to anyone who is shopping for clothing that is priced at $75 or under for each item. This also applies to individuals who shop the extended weekend even if they do not have children. There is no limit on the total purchase, just on the per item price which also applies to the school supplies.

Also included are school supplies that are priced at under $20. This is a great time to stock up on that list of pencils, erasers and markers for the classroom. If you are looking to buy instructional materials, those too are tax exempt if priced at or under $20. This includes text books and work books for the classroom.

Items placed in layaway would need to be picked up during this time period. The tax exempt status will not apply to any layaway done during this time period for a later pickup.

Last year shoppers saved an estimated $3.3 million in taxes during this tax holiday in 2015 based on a study done by University of Cincinnati Economics Center.
