The Northwestern Board of Education (BOE) held a regular meeting at 6:00 p.m. on Aug. 18 at Northwestern Elementary School. During the meeting, authorization was given to several contractors for building and maintenance projects that the district has been dealing with for some time.

BOE members approve the lowest bid for the outside lighting project provided by Triec Electrical Services in Springfield at a bid of $74,175.00. The Board accepted the lowest bid for a Boiler project provided by Roger Storer & Sons Plumbing in Springfield at a bid of $142,220.00. BOE members also granted authority to enter into contract with Bassett Associates Landscape Architects and Planners in Lima for a proposed Master Landscape Plan.

A donation of $2495.00 was accepted from the Northwestern Band Boosters. The monies are the first of five annual donations the Band Boosters are making to go towards the cost of a new band tower.

BOE member, Donna Myers, will be serving in a leadership role for the Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA). The OSBA was created for the purpose of fulfilling and advancing the District’s statutory mandate by working for the general advancement of public education in Ohio. The OSBA also works towards achieving desirable and efficient working relationships among Ohio boards of education, school administrators, teachers, and the public. Additionally, the OSBA maintains channels for exchange of ideas among and distribution of information to school districts, with the purpose of providing better and more effective public service to public schools.

The BOE determined that Donna Myers ‘s service and travel in her OSBA leadership role is related to her official duties as a member of Northwestern’s BOE, and so resolved that the District will pay any of Myers’ travel expenses necessary for her to attend OSBA conferences, seminars, and similar events during the year of 2016-2017. However, the travel expenses must be the lesser of either the amount that Northwestern Local School District allows to be reimbursed for travel to the destination; or the current per diem rate set by the United States General Services Administration for travel to the destination.

In other business, the Board granted its approval for the Northwestern Volleyball team to participate in an upcoming three-day volleyball tournament in Mason, Ohio. BOE members also gave their consent for the District to establish the new position of Accompanist at a pay rate of $8.50 per hour.

In Personnel business, the Board accepted the resignations of Kathrine Baldwin (Bus Driver, Aug. 7, 2016) and Amelita York (Cook/Bus Aide, Aug. 19, 2016). BOE members also gave their approval for several new hires and a volunteer to work in the district.

BOE meeting agendas and complete meeting minutes can be found on the District’s webpage at http://www.northwestern.k12.oh.us under the “About” tab. Minutes are available upon BOE approval.

The next regular meeting of the Northwestern BOE will be at 6:00 p.m. on Sept. 15, 2016 in the Northwestern Elementary School library.
