New Carlisle City Council member Bill McIntire has resigned from council.
He has moved out of the city, and is no longer eligible to sit on council. McIntire is serving his second term.
“Thank you for two votes of confidence,” said McIntire. “Right now, I’m going to take some time to be a husband and a dad.”
All of the other council members thanked McIntire for his service to the city.
“You’ve put your heart into New Carlisle, and we thank you for that,” said Council member Lowell McGlothin.
Council also voted to enter into an agreement with the City of Cleveland to handle income tax collections. Council heard a presentation from Dennis Bernaciak, Administrative Manager of the Central Collection Agency, a branch of the City of Cleveland that handles tax collections for a number of municipalities throughout the state.
“The benefits of dealing with CCA is savings for the city and more services,” said Bernaciak.
With CCA, New Carlisle taxpayers will be able to file their returns and pay their taxes online. They also have an 800 number to answer questions and take payments.
“The benefits to the city will be cost savings and increased collections,” said City Manager Randy Bridge. “They have a lot more services than we can offer in-house.”
Bernaciak said that CCA staff members would be in New Carlisle at certain times during the tax season to help taxpayers fill out returns and to answer questions.
Bridge stressed the fact that City Tax Administrator Vicki Taylor will remain with the city until her retirement in June.
The city expects to save $34,667 annually by taking advantage of CCA’s services.
“People have come to council meetings and told us that we need to think outside the box,” said Mayor Mike Lowrey. “I think this is something we should try. If it doesn’t work, we can always opt out.”
The ordinance passed 4-3, with Council members Ethan Reynolds, William Lindsey and John Krabacher voting no.
Council also had before them an ordinance to add Recyclebank to the Waste Management contract, effective December 1.
Recyclebank is a program that gives members points and other benefits for recycling.
“This would add 50¢ per month to every trash bill,” said Bridge.
The ordinance died for lack of a motion.
The next meeting of New Carlisle City Council will be on Monday, November 21 at 7:00 p.m. at the Smith Park Shelter House. The public is invited to attend.
